Saint Cecilia’s Day Care offers fun, relaxed and enjoyable sessions in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It provides the visitors with an enjoyable and stimulating day out filled with activities and companionship and, where relevant, allows their carers some valuable respite time.
We welcome older people and those with dementia or any physical or mental disability, following assessment.
We are led by our visitors and they decide what we will do during the day – if we have planned a quiz and they want to play bingo, then bingo it is!
Visitors come as often as they wish, with some coming for one or two sessions a week and others for four or more.
When people come to day care they become a part of the Saint Cecilia’s family and we provide the best care we can for them thanks to our professional, highly trained and compassionate staff. We are also here to provide help and support to their carers and relatives.
Day care provides huge benefits for those who come. It helps them retain their independence, form new friendships, helps banish loneliness and improves both mental health and physical health and mobility.
Our visitors look forward to visiting with many commenting that they miss one another when they are not at day care. It becomes an important and valuable part of their week and we have had many visitors who have been coming to us for many, many years – including one gentleman who has been coming for 10 years or more. They and their families describe it as a lifeline.
Our qualified, trained staff enjoy the sessions and have a passion and dedication for providing care and bringing enjoyment to our visitors each day. They get great satisfaction from the job and from making a difference to the lives of those in our care. That hard work is appreciated by the day care visitors who tell us they have enjoyed themselves and cannot wait to come back! We love learning about and getting to know the day care visitors and helping them to get more out of life.

A typical day begins with a welcome cup of tea and a slice of cake, followed by the morning activity, which tends to be group-based with everyone who wants to take part joining in something like a quiz or a game. Our staff are very imaginative and always coming up with new games and activities. We all sit down together for a delicious two-course lunch when the visitors enjoy catching up with fellow guests and our staff. More activities follow lunch, with the opportunity for further group games or individual crafts and pastimes. In the summer our visitors love to sit or potter in the gardens, which is very therapeutic.
Say hello to some of the key members of staff at our home.
Julia Tindall
Day Care Manager
Experienced carer Julia has been our Head of Care at our day care centre since 2015 and got the job because she had such a natural, empathetic way with people.
“I think doing this job has found something in me that I didn’t know existed,” Julia says. “You gain a lot from the visitors as they gain a lot from getting out of the house and coming along to day care.
“Making them happy, knowing they have had a good day out and seeing them improve too.
“We have people come who might have become a little withdrawn and to see them come here and come out of themselves is really rewarding.
“They know they can be themselves here, relax, have some fun, play a game and enjoy the company of others. It is lovely to know that we have helped with that and made a difference.
“People can join in with activities as much or as little as they want and for some just getting out of the house, enjoying the company of others and a delicious hot meal can be a real tonic.”
It is thanks to Julia that day care is always introducing new and exciting games and activities for the visitors to enjoy.
“I never switch off – even when I’m on holiday I’ll see something and think, ‘we could do that at day care’,” she says.
Paige Spry
Care Assistant
Care Assistant Paige lives close to our day care centre and used to say to herself “I’d love to work there” whenever she passed.
Her wish came true when, after a period working as a healthcare assistant at a Scarborough nursing home and in a food outlet, she heard of a vacancy at the centre.
“I couldn’t wait to apply,” she says. “I was lucky enough to get the job and have loved it ever since.
“The visitors become a part of your family and you look forward to seeing them every day.
“We get to enjoy their company during the best part of their day. They arrive ready to have fun, to be entertained and enjoy themselves – it is a real privilege.”
Paige, who has NVQ levels 2 and 3 in care, says the friendships the visitors develop are priceless.
“For someone who might not get out as much as they did, they really look forward to coming here and catching up with new friends they have made,” she adds. “For me, a good day is one that has been almost chaotic – filled with lots of noise, fun and laughter, when you can hear everyone having a good time. That is when you go home and think you’ve made a real difference to someone’s day. That is really rewarding, and I am thankful to be a part of it.”
Alana Edwards
Care Assistant
Alana first came to day care for work experience whilst she was studying health and social care at college. She loved it so much she volunteered during her holidays and once she had left college, was delighted to get a job at the centre.
“I had always wanted to work in care and during my time on placement got to really love working at the day care centre,” she says. “I get a great deal of satisfaction from looking after others and love to see how much the visitors get from coming here. They make new friends, become more confident and outgoing. It is something they look forward to and to see them happy and enjoying themselves makes me very happy in my job.”
Alana particularly likes the activities the day care visitors enjoy – especially a game of music bingo.
“They get a lot from that, especially those with dementia as the music we have from the 50s, 60s and 70s really stirs some memories for them – that is lovely to see,” she adds.
Mark Gibbon
Care Assistant
Mark Gibbon joined day care as a care assistant a year ago, our first full-time male member of staff at the centre!
Mark spent part of his working life as a taxi driver, before switching to care and working in a number of care and nursing homes in the area.
Whilst studying for his degree in Health and Social Care, Mark enjoyed a placement here at day care and loved it so much he applied for a full-time job.
“I wish I’d known more about working in care when I was younger, because I love it so much,” he says. “It’s different every day, and always a pleasure to see the visitors and their happy, smiling faces. It gives our visitors pleasure and something to look forward to and that is great isn’t it.”
Jenna Price
Care Assistant
For Jenna Price, seeing the happiness good quality care brought to her granddad awakened a desire to become a carer herself.
Jenna is a Care Assistant at Saint Cecilia’s Day Care but had originally trained to be a hairdresser.
“But then when grandad Brian got ill, I saw the joy that good care brought to him at the very toughest time of his life and I think it was that that made me decide I wanted to work in care,” she says.
So after a period of time working in hospitality, Jenna joined us at day care and has never looked back.
“I love the bond that we get with the day care visitors,” she adds. “And I see the same joy in the faces of those we are caring for as I saw in my granddad’s, which is what it is all about.
“Day care provides tremendous benefits. To those who come it is about catching up with their friends, making new friends and enjoying wonderful companionship, a nice meal and some fun and enjoyable activities. They don’t think of it as ‘day care’ they call it their ‘club’, somewhere they can be themselves, relax and enjoy the day.
“For their loved ones it can be a lifeline, a break from caring in the knowledge that they are being well looked after and having a great time.
“We get a great deal of satisfaction from it too – seeing people happy, independent and enjoying themselves makes you feel good.”
Away from day care, Jenna has her hands full with her boys, Tyla-James, 11 and Kayden, eight and also enjoys gardening and reading.
We accept both North Yorkshire Council and private placements at this centre. To request a price list and furhter information, please submit an enquiry or call us on 01723 502410.
