Moving into a care home is a big thing and we never lose sight of that. We work with our residents and their families to make the transition as easy and comfortable as possible, building the confidence that their needs, personal and emotional, are going to be met with us.
Normanby House is our residents’ home and it is our privilege to look after them and to care for them here, helping to preserve and enhance their happiness, dignity and independence.
People comment on how accessible the home is and how families can come in at any time to see their loved ones – just, as it should be, a home from home. We always work with the resident’s family to give them the support they need at what can be a stressful time for them too.
The care we offer begins with the resident’s care plan, carefully drawn up with the resident, their family and input from health professionals. This gives us a start in our journey to get to know our residents as individuals – what they did as a job, what family they have and, most importantly, what they like to do. Our care is as personal and as individual as we can make it, so we like to know our residents’ likes and dislikes – when they like to get up, what they like for breakfast, do they like activities and so on – every detail is important.
Whilst all our carers work to care for all our residents, each resident will have a member of staff allocated to them each day to manage their care throughout that day, ensuring consistency and continuity of care and anticipating their needs and wishes. They are also available for valuable one-to-one time with the resident too.
Our staff are passionate about the care they offer, many have been with us for many years – some 15, 20 years or more – so we have a wealth of experience and expertise. They are highly trained, passionate and motivated and we appreciate and value their hard work and commitment. We have a strong, settled and happy team, with good staff retention and work in a positive atmosphere where we are proud of the care we offer.
Staff get a lot from the relationships that they build with the residents and it is that relationship building that is key to our care. We see the residents as part of our family and build warm, loving relationships between staff and residents within the home. It is our pleasure and privilege to be on this part of our residents’ journey with them. We believe in care with a smile and care with a cuddle.

Normanby House is a modern, well-equipped and purpose-built care home in a quiet cul-de-sac a stone’s throw from Scarborough town centre. With a pleasant and open garden area and set back from other buildings, Normanby House is a little oasis of calm and serenity for our residents to enjoy this new stage of their lives.
All our pleasant, light and airy bedrooms are ensuite and comfortable and we work with the residents to help them personalise them, making them more homely.
Visitors always comment on our beautiful dining room. With its wall-sized mural of Scarborough it is often a hub of activity, with residents enjoying social mealtimes with fellow residents and our kitchen staff who are on hand to enjoy a chat and a laugh thanks to the close proximity of the kitchen itself.
They ensure that all our residents enjoy delicious, home-cooked and nutritious food that is tailored to our residents’ likes, dislikes and dietary needs. We are flexible about mealtimes and residents can eat what they like, when and where they wish – just as they would at home.
We have a large and pleasant lounge where our residents can enjoy both group and individual games and activities, again according to their own choice and wishes.
At Normanby House we place great importance on providing our residents with the opportunity to join in and enjoy as many activities as they would like. We know how crucial it is to our residents’ happiness and mental and physical health that they stay as active and stimulated as possible.
There are many things to do for those residents who want to join in – from round-the-table arts and crafts to bingo, music sessions and outings in one of the care group’s minibuses.
Typically, it will be things like arts and crafts, nail painting or completing the resident’s memory book – a pictorial record of previous activities – during the mornings and more expansive activities, like a quiz, bingo, music or a trip in the minibus, during afternoons. The home also welcomes visiting musicians and other visitors, like those bringing in pets or birds of prey, for example. Sometimes, in the evenings, residents will enjoy a cheese and wine evening or a movie night. There is also ample time for one-to-one time with our staff and our doors are always open for visitors.
We are proud of our home and always look forward to welcoming new residents and visitors to the Saint Cecilia’s family.
Say hello to some of the key members of staff at our home.
Jacie Whittaker
Home Manager
Jacie Whittaker always wanted to run a care home of her own and now she is relishing the opportunity as Home Manager at Normanby House.
She worked her way up the ranks with Saint Cecilia’s Care Group before taking on the role she relishes.
“It is a real pleasure and privilege to be responsible for the whole of the operation, the residents and the staff, I really enjoy it,” she says.
Born in Scarborough, Jacie brought with her years of experience of working in other care settings around the area when she joined us as a Care Assistant. Since then, she has worked her way up to the roles of Team Leader, Deputy Manager and now Home Manager, across Saint Cecilia’s.
She had seen firsthand the care her grandma had received, following a stroke, and believed there had to be something better.
Her number one priority is creating a safe and loving home for the residents, where their physical, mental and emotional care is paramount.
“We never forget that this is their home, not ours and we are there to look after them,” she says.
She is always happy to support the staff during their shifts, especially if it frees up other carers to give the residents the one-to-one time with the staff that they love.
“We are providing personal, individual care to the residents, so it is important that they feel valued, the centre of everything we do and giving them time, getting to know them well, is a really important part of that,” adds Jacie.
“We want to know what makes them happy and what might unsettle them, for example. What works for one, might not work for another, but you only get to know that from giving a person time.
“Maintaining a happy, settled and motivated team of staff to achieve that is also key.”
For Jacie, a perfect day at Normanby House is one where all the residents are happy and contented and the staff are happy too.
Gemma Prew
Care Assistant
Gemma Prew became a Care Assistant because she wanted to ‘give something back’ to the people she looks after.
“The older and vulnerable adults that we look after have given so much to us and to our country and I always thought I wanted to give back to them,” she says. “I have always had a caring nature and found that working in the care profession is the perfect job for me – I just absolutely love it!”
After a couple of years as a mobile carer, Gemma joined Normanby House in 2022 and has loved the opportunity to spend more quality time with the people in her care.
“I really enjoy it at Normanby. There’s a great atmosphere, very welcoming and a great team spirit – everyone is working hard and doing their best to provide the best care for the residents.
“To be able to get to know someone, spend time with them and help them to stay happy and independent is a real privilege,” she says.
Her role as part of the care team, is to provide the hands-on care our residents need, from getting up and dressed in the morning, enjoying mealtimes, activities and outings, to going to bed again at night, and everything in between.
David Higgins
Chef Manager
After 15 years with Normanby House, Chef Manager, David Higgins knows a thing or two about providing delicious, nutritious food for our residents.
He has spent all his working life in catering and loves the interaction with the residents at Normanby.
“We are very lucky here at Normanby because the kitchen is right next to the dining room so we can pop in and out and have a chat with the residents during mealtimes,” he says. “It also means that they or their relatives can drop in and talk to us, which is lovely.
“Food is really important at Normanby, the residents look forward to mealtimes when they can have something nice to eat and enjoy a chat and a laugh with their fellow residents and the staff. It is a social occasion.”
“This is our residents’ home so it is our job to make sure they have something they will enjoy eating,” he adds. “We always have a couple of choices but even then, if someone comes down and doesn’t fancy either, we will make them something else. I always say, ‘if I can make it for you, I will.’
Years of experience help him to ensure each individual resident gets the right food, prepared to any likes or dislikes and dietary requirements, where appropriate. That can mean, for example, different textures of food, for those who might start to find eating difficult or ensuring a resident has fortified food when they need building up.
“All the residents are different and that is part of the enjoyment of cooking for them,” adds David. “At the end of the day providing food is like everything we do here, it is about treating people as individuals and with care and respect.”
We accept both North Yorkshire Council and private placements at this home. Our pricing in dependent upon an individuals needs, and would be confirmed after the completion of an assessment. To request an assessment, please submit an enquiry or call us on 01723 501638.
