why Saint Cecilia's...

Saint Cecilia’s Care Group is a family-owned and award-winning business which has been providing outstanding care to our local communities for more than 30 years. We have earned an excellent reputation, not just as a provider of exceptional care across Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale, but also as a caring, kind and supportive employer that values and rewards its staff and as a campaigning voice for social care.

With two nursing homes, three residential homes and a day care centre, the group provides care to 134 residents and employs more than 200 staff.

The company has won a host of regional and national awards and last year was named Employer of the Year at the Scarborough Business Excellence Awards.

History

Modest beginnings

Saint Cecilia’s Care Group began in 1989, when Mike and Melanie Padgham bought a property in Stepney Road, Scarborough and began providing care for eight residents.

Originally from Hastings on the south coast, Mike and Mel had experience of social care provision, having both worked in healthcare and seen the delivery of care to their own family and others.

Mel, a state registered nurse and Mike, who was also working for the health service, believed that they could provide a better standard of care than they had seen before. They looked at a number of properties before deciding upon the semi-detached house on the North Yorkshire coast.

Living above the shop

To begin with the couple lived in a flat at the top of the building and split their time between providing care for their residents and looking after their eldest son Aaron.

Mike and Mel saw that the greatest need was for specialist dementia care and the home began to concentrate on providing care to those with that condition. When the neighbouring property came up for sale, the family bought it and expanded the care home, doubling the capacity overnight.

Bringing our care to you

In 1995, the company began providing domiciliary care (providing mobile care for people in their own home) through a Carewatch franchise.

Over the next years the company successfully provided this homecare to hundreds of grateful clients. Later, in 2011, Carewatch bought back some of its franchise operations and Saint Cecilia’s withdrew from homecare provision for the time being to concentrate on building its residential and day care provision.

A home of our own

In 2009 the company bought a former doctors’ surgery at Eastfield House as a new HQ.

The move enabled the company to move its head office out of Scarborough town centre and opened up the opportunity to provide first a luncheon club and then a popular day care for the local community.

Rapid expansion

In 2016, Saint Cecilia’s embarked upon significant expansion with the purchase of the former Queen Margaret’s Nursing Home, quickly renaming it Saint Cecilia’s Nursing Home.

Growth continued in 2018 when the Group added Normanby House, a purpose-built care home located close to Scarborough town centre, to the family. In late 2019, the company took on its first care setting outside of Scarborough by buying Alba Rose, a beautiful care home in the picturesque town of Pickering.

Then in 2022 Saint Cecilia’s took over Oakland nursing home in Whitby, renaming it Jubilee House in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who had celebrated her platinum jubilee in the summer of that year.

To be continued…

Saint Cecilia’s Care Group is always looking to grow and expand whilst never straying from its mission to serve its local community by providing the highest quality of care.
